The crowd at Nola's bar, six deep with techies not an hour before, had thinned to little clusters of buddies fixated on the Sports Channel. Debbie Giacomo and her three friends, perched on too-tall stools around a table, felt wasted, and not from their warm Anchor Steam pale ales. Giacomo, a year-old third-grade teacher in nearby Hayward, surveying the remaining, idling men.

The Manginis met early in life; Sharon at age 14 and Frank at 16, and working at a supermarket. Such was their childhood growing up near Ventura Boulevard in Encino. The Quinn's are celebrating their 63rd anniversary this year.

Sharon arrived in California six months pregnant and Frank experienced his share of stress at a new job. Ralph, 90, jokes that he married an older woman in Maddie, who is two-plus months his senior.

In man-rich silicon valley, it seems like

The mothers recall pushing both children together in baby buggies around Golden Gate Park. The couple got married on Sept. Their first date was at a movie in downtown San Jose and the couple were chaperoned by Lois' grandmother, Eva, whose own marriage lasted 75 years. Both became teachers. After 62 years of marriage the couple has three children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The couple have four children, 12 grandchildren, and 2 great-grand children. I think it was love at first sight. After that, they hopped on a train with just a few possessions and each other. It was like being in a lifeboat with somebody—you gotta make it work. Report an error Policies and Standards. They have four children, 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The two eventually returned to Southern California. The unexpected encounter got the two talking and hanging out more during work days in San Francisco.

They had two separate weddings, one in a Greek Orthodox church and the other in an Irish Catholic church. The Manginis have lived in Cupertino sinceand they will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in September. Some church friends even wrote about their story in a letter to President Obama, who wrote back with a congratulatory letter and a ed photograph. Carol and Frank Bonzell could very well be the spokespersons for fate, destiny or master plans dictated by the universe.

She agreed with a smile. Only after they started dating did they discover that they had been in the same kindergarten class together at Lawton Elementary School in San Francisco. The young family would take camping trips or go to the drive-in movies once a week. Frank was recruited by Lockheed and the two flew out to California and away from home forever. Later that summer, the two discovered they were both vacationing with their families near the same resort in Lake County.

From that first meeting, I knew there was no other woman for me. The two first met in the third grade at Encino Elementary School, and the students seemed to always be around each other, whether it was playing on the maypole, running around the baseball field or making music in the school orchestra—Maddie with the violin and Ralph on the trumpet. They personally sponsor trophies that are awarded to the most valuable players of the junior varsity and varsity homecoming football games, helped purchase school band uniforms and have contributed to school scholarships.

While Frank was buried in engineering work at Ohio State, dates were often once a week in the Ohio State library while Frank hit the books. Some things are a matter of when, not if, and that certainly applies to the story of Ralph and Maddie. As the two got to know one another better, they realized they not only were the same age but shared the same March 23 birthday. And just one year and three months later, they were married at Sacred Heart Church in San Jose in Three months after they moved into their first home together, where they still reside today on E. Taylor Avenue in Sunnyvale, John was drafted.

The library card that started it all is preserved in one of many cherished scrapbooks in their Sunnyvale living room. When it came time to move, one family moved to the block of 36th Avenue and the other to the block. As youngsters, Sharon and Frank would make 3- to 4-mile treks to visit one another or ask a parent to drive them to the movies on Sundays. The somethings quickly bonded, going on several dates together—once to Yankee Stadium and a trip to the New York Zoo, where they stayed so late they got locked in and he had to help her hop the fence in a skirt and heels.

She worked as the librarian, and he was a student. Still, they were always around each other, because of their similar interests, common church and shared close-knit group of friends. Neither family approved of them being together, but after just two weeks of courtship, the two decided to get married and start a life together in California.

After 14 years trying to have a baby—including two failed adoptions and a premature baby who died at birth—the couple had two children, David and Darlene. In their youth, the couple went on trips nearly every weekend, whether it was Tahoe and Yosemite or the beach in Santa Cruz.

The entire family might also take in a UC-Berkeley versus Ohio State football game if the schedule permits. The young couple helped each other through those early first years. The couple would not realize just how close they were to another until well into high school. The Sunnyvale couple will celebrate their 71st anniversary on September Ralph and Madeleine met in third grade at Encino Elementary School but didn't start dating until they attended Canoga Park High together.

The two saved their money as John worked his way up the ladder at Westinghouse Electric, where after 40 years he earned his engineering degree through work experience. The couple and family watched a film scene of Frank playing Ring Around the Rosie with a little girl. The Cupertino couple spent their early years together, in the late s and early s attending high school in Ohio and later when Frank attended Ohio State University.

The couple experienced a great deal of culture shock when they first arrived in California, not knowing anybody and staying briefly inside an unusual Eichler-style home. Sixty-three years of marriage later, the couple had three children together, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The coincidences continued well into life.

At the same time they learned that Lois was pregnant. The family plans to take a trip with their children and grandchildren somewhere where they can enjoy each other and their surroundings, perhaps to Yosemite National Park. More in News.

Finally, Ralph found a way to turn their friendship into a romance. Determined to get to know this girl better, John, his hands visibly shaking from nervousness, finally asked Christine out when she was getting off work.

Maddie followed, as the training bounced the couple between Southern and Central California and later Pecos, Texas. InRalph landed a job with Lockheed and the couple moved to Sunnyvale, where they still live in the same home. He shamelessly admits he would purposely stand in line to check out books just to see her. Carol is roughly five hours older. Their first date was at a movie in downtown San Jose and the couple were chaperoned by Lois' grandmother, Eva Breeding, seen in the top photo with husband Morton, whose own marriage lasted 75 years.

Ralph adds that their similar backgrounds and common interests helped in their relationship and made things easier. A still from a video taken of the two of them holding hands back then sits in the frame above.

They have had a lot of good memories and still continue to be active and do everything together. They even took the same bus to work and promised to coordinate travel times for the ride together. More coincidental revelations were unearthed. When John was laid off after 11 years at Lockheed, they worked together at his own television repair shop, Regent TV, in Sunnyvale.

Next to the program is John's old library card from the library where she worked at in New York City. When not taking trips together, the couple was working together. One day, she noticed he had two library cards from two different libraries.

Last year, they celebrated their 70th anniversary by going on a cruise to Hawaii and hosting friends and family for a party in October. You have to realize that there are going to be ups and downs not only in marriage but in life. By growing up together and waiting to marry, the Manginis knew they made the right choice. Their mothers were also in the school PTA, and their families shared Sunday night dinners together.

The couple credits their longevity to watching out for one another and thinking long term. They both grew up in the Bronx, John in a traditional Irish family and Christine in an old-fashioned Greek family. There was shock and excitement when Carol realized she was that little girl.

The couple were introduced by a friend and have three children and three grandchildren. Looking back at their time together, both Ralph and Maddie seem to agree that it was always meant to be this way.
